Expressions of Harlem involved residents from the neighborhood surrounding the Studio Museum in Harlem. Community members from the Northern Manhattan Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Resurrection School, and Strictly Roots restaurant were asked a series of questions about expression. A multimedia installation documented the residents’ responses and Cook’s interaction with them through video, audio tape, drawing, painting, and writing. An additional seven works were mounted across Harlem near the locations where the models lived.
