June Jordan Collaborative Project

Inspired by the legacy of the poet and political activist June Jordan after her death on June 14, 2002, Cook immersed himself in Jordan’s writing, interviews, and speeches. Through a mass email invitation, he then solicited submissions from his community of any material of their choice related to Jordan. The submissions were compiled into a notebook including several samples of Jordan’s written work, alongside many materials related to her legacy—images of breast cancer deaths annually in the United States, for example, and Ntozake Shange’s poem Ego (for June Jordan). One copy of the notebook was installed in Harlem to commemorate Jordan in the place of her birth.
