Peace and Mindfulness Collaboration, Headlands Center for the Arts

2004   |   Marin, CA
PROJECT PARTNERS:
Visitors to the Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin County, California were encouraged to reflect on peace and mindfulness. Five connect-the-dot drawings of Arundhati Roy, Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thich Nhat Hanh, and Julia Butterfly Hill were the centerpieces of a collaboration that included a variety of creative media, academic disciplines, and social interaction.

At the completion of Brett Cook’s 2004 Bridge Residency at the Headlands Center, the Peace and Mindfulness Collaboration was installed on a vacant gas station in Berkeley, California as a contribution to the history of one of America’s most anti-war cities.

Mindfulness is the practice of peace. Our lack of mindfulness is what creates our suffering. Some parts of suffering can be subtle: we live our lives burdened by small obstacles we misinterpret as the regular pitfalls of life—losing our house keys, forgetting a sock in the dryer, stepping on gum on the sidewalk. Our suffering can also be severe in the way the word typically connotes: pain, fear, and oppression. By actively recognizing the magic of the infinite relationships that inform our physical existence in life, we appreciate the benefit of consciousness, or enhance our ability to be present. By becoming more present and aware of our incorrect comprehension of the world around us, we transcend habits that bring misfortune to others and ourselves. By making beautiful images of people advocating for peace, as in the Peace and Mindfulness Collaboration, we become models of accountability.

“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community […] Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.”

“Another world is not only possible, she's on her way. Maybe many of us won't be here to greet her, but on a quiet day, if I listen very carefully, I can hear her breathing.”
