San Francisco Art Institute Collaboration Intensive

PROJECT PARTNERS:
Student participants in this two-week intensive at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) were involved in complex and authentic work that demanded deep understanding, and encouraged both collaborative learning and individual autonomy. In the session, participants examined their personal concept of identity and issues related to identity in the world around them. Students worked collaboratively on class exercises, engaging other classmates, their social networks, SFAI, and the larger Bay Area community, sharing important reflections about identity in a positive way. The intensive supported them in developing a knowledge of organizational structures, and culminated with a large exhibition of installations that represented the process and products of collaboration.

Each day started with meditation—Tuesday with mindful orange eating. Sometimes we did more familiar things, but with non-traditional processes producing extraordinary outcomes.

We used a variety of materials to cultivate our thoughtfulness. People provided individual expertise and choice to address collective action. We practiced being mindful individually and practiced collective strategies that improved the group.

The studio became a living space filled with energy. Throughout the space were documents of our lessons together. Collaborative experiences were created about people who work for love that included people and ideas outside of the academic setting yet was accessible and viewable by the larger school community.
