Separations involved residents from three parts of San Diego, Californiawith differing geographic, class, cultural, and ethnic populations. The residents were recorded responding to questions about their reasons for staying within their neighborhood and not experiencing the alternate two locations. Images of the interviewees were painted and mounted in one of the communities they did not frequent, alongside their transcribed interviews explaining why they did not go to that community.
