Course Spotlight: Accountable in Oakland, CCA

Accountable in Oakland

CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF THE ARTS, 2016

A course that provided an opportunity for students to engage with local and global diverse communities in Oakland through interactive, participatory, and/or performance methods. Featuring the 2016 Life is Living Festival and its celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Black Panthers as a foundation, CCA students were supported to experience established activities as springboards for personal contributions in community. Community based best practices were discussed throughout the class through participatory learning including community context and location. Best practices for community engagement, ethics, cultural sensitivity and themes arising from present conditions of diverse communities were addressed. Regular guest lecturers and class trips exposed students to artists and scholars who position diversity as a core value in their work.

Issues examined in the course included:
  • What is the special attraction for artists of working collaboratively?
  • What are the roles of the artist, community, and audience and how do those relate to being a respectful participant?
  • How does one attribute quality or success to collaborative projects?
  • What is the relationship between process and product?
